A Lazy Sunday in Herne Hill

I’ve been wanting to try out The Lido Cafe in forever. For those of you who don’t know, this place has cafe goals written all over. If I owed a cafe, I’d want it to look like this.

Nestled on the edge of Brockwell Lido, one of London’s well known pools and swimming spots, you can spend a lazy Sunday casual eating brunch while looking out across a sunny (weather depending) scene, and pretend you’re anywhere else but London. The poolside in Spain maybe.

Inside huge pom poms hang from the ceiling in pastel colours, and swimming themed sketches and patterns fill the walls. A short wait for a table (you can book ahead, but equally turn up on the day), we grabbed a coffee and sat outside in the sunshine.

What partly attracted me here, other than it’s gorgeous interior,  is that the menu is fully labelled and features lots of gluten free to be had. I was stuck between sweet and savoury, eyeing up pancakes, as well as craving a full English. It’s not often you spot gluten free pancakes on a menu, these ones made with almond flour, but I went for the full English, having spotting one shortly after opening the menu.

With just a slight moderation (no sausage) and changing standard toast to gluten free toast, my breakfast was perfect. We decided to share a side of avocado for some added greens, and a cold Moju juice to start (to help balance out all that grease!).

Taking in the hustle and bustle around us, we sat chatting long after our meal had finished, before taking a wander to around Brockwell Park and Herne Hill market. The park is huge, and after a short walk we discovered lots more hidden spots, including a community garden, an edible garden inside a greenhouse, and a rose garden which resembled something out of the Secret Garden!

On the way back to the station, we spotted off at Herne Hill’s Sunday market, which runs from 10am-4pm, by which I had just enough space to squeeze in some gluten free cake. I was surprised to see range of food stalls, many of which had gluten free bakery options, so there was lots of cake I had my eye on.

We finished the afternoon eating cake at the edge of the park in the sun. A perfect lazy Sunday.
